Married to Cardio

Just like most of you who are involved with HOSA, I hope to be a health professional in the future, and going into the medical field has always been part of my career plan

I first pondered a future in the healthcare field during my visits to the pediatrician in my early childhood years. My pediatrician served as a role model for me, and I wanted to grow up to be just like her, helping children feel better and “making the boo-boo’s go away”, as my kindergarten self would probably think of pediatrics as.

Of course, I was young at the time, unsure of where the future would take me. However, as I grew older, I continued to delve into science, whether it be through at-home experiments or reading books about the human body. At that time, I started to realize I definitely wanted to become a healthcare professional.

It wasn’t until my freshman year of high school in my Principles of Biomedical Science course where I pin-pointed my exact career goal: cardiology. Mesmerized by the workings of the heart circuit, I fell in love with cardiology, or ironically, the heart. I was absolutely enamored with cardiology: the heartbeat, angiograms, and especially heart transplants and surgery.

In fact, I found myself watching heart transplant videos as a method of stress relief because when I watched these videos, I could completely forget the world around me and the stress weighing down on me; I was preoccupied taking in every second of the surgical procedure.

Today, I am working towards being a cardiac surgeon, so I can watch cardiac surgeries with my own eyes rather than a computer screen or viewing window in the operation room.

Although this journey is a difficult one, I am not alone by any means. I’m walking towards my destination equipped with the support of my peers, the incredible organization that is HOSA, my teachers and mentors, and my family. I absolutely cannot wait for my journey into the healthcare field, and I hope you are just as excited to become a future health professional as I am!
