University of Southern Indiana HOSA Chapter

Students pursuing careers in healthcare have joined forces to establish a new campus chapter of HOSA Future Health Professionals at the University of Southern Indiana. "HOSA truly drives my passion for the healthcare field" said Samara Sullivan, health services major and president of USI\'s HOSA chapter. "Being involved provides me with the knowledge necessary to give me an edge in such a competitive field. I have gained confidence and strength and am motivated to help others." HOSA is an international student-led organization founded in 1976 which offers activities to develop future leaders for the healthcare system. It provides students with: opportunities to develop leadership skills and qualities, develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, network with healthcare professionals at local, state and national levels, and participate in community service projects. Shelbie Simpkins, health services major and vice president for USI HOSA said membership in the organization offers many opportunities for students. "I'm very excited that HOSA continues to broaden my perspective of the healthcare field and bring a variety of opportunities into my education and career," she said. "Most importantly I have learned to never underestimate the power of networking." University advisors for the USI HOSA chapter include Dr. Richard Bennett, assistant professor of biology; Jane Friona, executive director of Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC); Jody Delp, director of respiratory therapy clinical education; Karen Parker, assistant professor of nursing; Kim Parsons, program chair of dental assisting; Kristina Walker, academic advisor, College of Nursing and Health Professions; Dr. Frank Ward, program chair of health services; Dr. Ethel Elkins, assistant professor of health services; Dr. Erin Reynolds, assistant professor of health services; and Dr. Gabriela Mustata Wilson, assistant professor of health informatics. The next meeting for USI\'s HOSA chapter will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, February 20, in Room 1008 in the Health Professions Center. Kathy Weinzapfel, assistant director of Career Services and Internships, will be giving a presentation on job seeking skills. Any USI student with an interest in healthcare as a career, regardless of their major, is welcome to join HOSA.
